Growing up I’d always been interested in so called low-brow painting techniques like hot rod pinstriping, tattooing, and custom van airbrushing. One day, after I’d been doing the stickers for about a year, I came across an abstract illusionist painting at my dermatologists’s office. This one was a typical example: cheesy squiggles of paint floating very convincingly over airbrush shadows—but it was a revelation. I went straight out and bought an airbrush and went mental. 1996 was probably my most productive year.
